About the Author

Dr. Jamila Battle is a compassionate and powerful woman tempered by the fire of years of abuse. She defied the odds and climbed out of the mayhem of her upbringing to achieve great success. She earned her way to a prestigious university and became a medical doctor with specialties in sleep, trauma (abuse), addiction, and mental health. Born in Atlanta, she moved to Los Angeles at the age of two. After 5 years, the family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Raised in Chattanooga, Dr. Battle went to the Baylor School, a college preparatory high school. She attended Duke University for her undergraduate studies and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for medical school. Dr. Battle enjoyed all of her medical rotations and decided that family medicine was a great fit for her, because it respects all facets of the human body and focuses on prevention. Dr. Battle completed residency training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After completing her training, she returned to North Carolina as a consulting associate at Duke University. Dr. Battle, board certified in family, sleep, and addiction medicine, is the creator of “Reboot, Repair, Rebirth.” She now dedicates her life, love and passion to not only her family, but also to helping those who have been wounded as she was. She brings you the shining light of possibility and true hope for you to experience “Reboot, Repair, and Rebirth™” in your life. This innovative model aids women and their families who have suffered trauma to truly forgive themselves, so they can become fully integrated and capable of self-love. After reading about what our Daddy went through growing up, that man never had a chance in hell. It doesn't excuse what he did, but it gives clarity to WHY he did what he did. HURT PEOPLE, HURT PEOPLE. What a miserable way to live. I can't imagine the hell and the turmoil that must have been going on in his head ALL THE TIME. I know that no matter how good of a musician he was, no matter the accolades, no matter the admiration from the women, no matter the respect from his peers, at the end of the day Daddy had to live with himself. And I know that deep down he must have really hated himself. In the end, he did not have the courage, the tools, or the ability to overcome his demons. We are our Father's children. The way that he abused us and the dysfunctional paths that we took differed but the result was that at our core, we reflected the self-hate and lack of self-worth that Daddy instilled in us and perhaps had for himself. We carried that around for years and years allowing it to affect our lives and the lives of those around us. Fortunately, we were able to have people who came into our lives who would eventually show us that there was actually light at the end of the tunnel. That all life didn't have to be despair. But all they could really do was point the way. The crucial work of healing had to begin from within and by taking an honest look deep into the depths of our very souls. It is probably the hardest thing for an individual to do but it has to be done in order to break the cycle of dysfunction. It takes a great deal of courage and humility to look at yourself in the mirror and to accept it ALL, the good, the bad, and the ugly, without judgment, just pure acceptance. However, it is the first step to HEALING, to SELF-RESPECT and ultimately SELF-ACTUALIZATION. It is an ONGOING process, one that I suspect never ends. I am SO PROUD OF YOU, Jamila. I am proud to call you my Sister and I am grateful to The Creator and The Forces in the Universe for bringing us together at this point and time in life's journey. You are living, breathing proof that cycles of destruction can be overcome and that it is possible to start anew. You are an inspiration to my own process and a validation that our family's legacy is greater than what we come from. We do not have to be defined by our victimhood but can choose to be defined by our creativity by being the reflection of The Creator that we were born to be. <3

Let me start by saying I was hesitant to read the book. I thought I knew about domestic violence, and child abuse. . . well, it's a subject I didn't care to read about in my free time. I expected it to be a very didactic read (cue snoring). Boy was I wrong! From Abuse to Abundance is part novel part self-help, and no part of it is boring or preachy. Dr. Battle is an excellent story teller and from the prologue I was gripped! This account of a young girl's life is written in such a personal way you can't help but to become engrossed in the story line-- except you have to remind yourself it's not just a story line, IT'S REAL. I was so riveted I couldn't put it down and read the whole book in about 4 hours! The experiences of Dr. Battle's childhood and adolescence are heartbreaking to say the least, but to witness the process by which she overcame such deep trauma felt like virtual reality. She describes her memories and even her present state so vividly you feel as though you are going through the reboot, repair, and rebirth process together.I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has experienced family violence. I also recommend this book to educators, counselors, ministers/pastors, or anyone else who deals with children. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand domestic violence and/or child abuse. Reading this book will help you to recognize the signs and understand why it is so important to observe, act/report, and follow-up!! Dr. Battle is to be commended for sharing such personal information. By doing so, I fully believe she can potentially help millions of people. You need to read and tell others about this book!

From ABUSE to ABUNDANCE was a wonderful and uplifting read. Dr. J. Battle walks readers through a high level view of her traumatic life experiences on a path that serves as a field guide to trauma, teaching readers how to "Reboot, Repair, and Rebirth" their own lives as she has done with hers. Concepts that have taken me years in therapy to grasp are explained simply in this easy-to-read book that feels more memoir than how-to guide.I can't recommend this book enough; I've already started sending it as gifts and I'll be recommending it to my entire family and a bipolar disorder support group I co-facilitate. I think this book is a game changer, and I'm happy I bought a paperback for a change as there are some passages in bold that serve as great daily affirmations. This is a book I'll be re-reading. I encourage you to purchase a paperback and share it with the world when you finish with it.Chapter 44 is "Weight Loss and Sweet Dreams". Dr. J 'rambles' a bit here talking in "medical mumbo-jumbo" about the importance of sleep, specifically REM sleep. The moral of the chapter? Sleep is important, and "you may need a sleep study". As for me? I recommend you get one at Parkway SleepHealth Centers in NC, where Jamila Battle, M.D is the Medical Director. Dr. Battle is my sleep doctor, and she was the doctor that diagnosed my narcolepsy. Small world, right? She didn't know I lived a traumatic life when she told me about herself and her book months ago, but I was in foster care from age 13-17 and I put myself through engineering school. At 24, I still have some repairing and rebirthing to do, but Dr. Battle's story is inspiring and I'm well on my way to rebirthing my inner wounded child like she has done.For those that have suffered trauma, Dr. Battle makes one reference in the book: Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (Guilford Substance Abuse). I'll be purchasing this for my therapist as I am always looking for help with my PTSD. Curious about narcolepsy? About the Author
Daniel Druckman is a 2004-2005 visiting Professor at the University of Queensland's Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies in Brisbane, Australia. He is the Vernon M. and Minnie I. Lynch Professor of Conflict Resolution at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where he has coordinated the doctoral program at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (I.C.A.R.).  He is also a member of the faculty at Sabanci University in Istanbul, Turkey and has held senior positions at several consulting firms, as well as at the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and was awarded a best-in-field prize from the American Institutes for Research for his doctoral dissertation. He has published widely (approximately 150 publications, including 12 authored or edited books) on such topics as negotiating behavior, nationalism and group identity, human performance, peacekeeping, political stability, nonverbal communication, and methodology (including simulation). He serves as a board member or associate editor for eight Journals. He received the 1995 Otto Klineberg award for Intercultural and International Relations from the Society for the Psychological Analysis of Social Issues for his work on nationalism, a Teaching Excellence award in 1998 from George Mason University, and an award for the outstanding article published in 2001 from the International Association for Conflict Management. He is the recipient of the 2003 Lifetime Achievement award from the International Association for Conflict Management.

The examples and computer code allow the reader to understand and implement basic Bayesian data analyses using standard statistical models and to extend the standard models to specialized data analysis situations. The book begins with fundamental notions such as probability, exchangeability and Bayes' rule, and ends with modern topics such as variable selection in regression, generalized linear mixed effects models, and semiparametric copula estimation. Numerous examples from the social, biological and physical sciences show how to implement these methodologies in practice. Monte Carlo summaries of posterior distributions play an important role in Bayesian data analysis. The open-source R statistical computing environment provides sufficient functionality to make Monte Carlo estimation very easy for a large number of statistical models and example R-code is provided throughout the text. Much of the example code can be run ``as is'' in R, and essentially all of it can be run after downloading the relevant datasets from the companion website for this book. Peter Hoff is an Associate Professor of Statistics and Biostatistics at the University of Washington. He has developed a variety of Bayesian methods for multivariate data, including covariance and copula estimation, cluster analysis, mixture modeling and social network analysis. This book is not a first course book.... I did stats for two years before trying this book and could not get through it. I've been in stats courses for three years and even now get stuck whenever I try this book. It's just not a first course level/appropriate level for the title.It had good programming tips, but that's what redeems it.As for a first course in Bayesian, try kruschke's book with the puppies. It's much simpler to get through.

The text is fine, although as another reviewer mentioned - the homework is frustrating. None of it is the sort of problem where you can go back and follow along with work done in the chapter. Not at all good for someone who prefers to learn by first mimicking, and then exploring.No, the BIG problem is that many of the formulas are stored as images since equations are incompatible with the file format. If you try to increase the text size so you can actually read them, the formulas stay the same tiny size. Trying to use the windows accessibility tools just results in a pixelated illegible formula.I would love to have all my texts in electronic format, but not until this issue can be fixed.

Extremely overpriced! I had to pay $60 for a paperback, and there are still TYPOs in the book? Are you kidding me? The publishing industry overcharges, but never fails to deliver in quality.However, the book is excellent for it's content, particularly for someone who is unfamiliar with Bayesian stats and only intermediary familiarity with probability distributions. The concepts are well explained with examples . However, this is not a standalone book, and probably Gelman's book is worth looking at along with this.

This is an appropriate practical introduction to Bayesian methods for someone who has taken both a college-level probability and statistics course. The multidimensional examples may require a bit of linear algebra. It doesn't include much comparison with frequentist techniques, so some familiarity there would help the reader put the ideas in context.Compared to a book like Christian Robert's excellent _The Bayesian Choice_, this book may appear inadequate, because it is less than half the size, is often less dense and scholarly, and is (currently at Amazon) almost double the price. However, I'm happy I have both because Hoff's book is more practical for someone who actually wants to use Bayesian statistics in practical situations. Hoff spends a lot of time discussing simple examples with wide application, and he actually shows the R code to compute the answers with MCMC techniques.However, after reading the book, I still don't feel totally prepared to apply R in real-life Bayesian situations. It would be nice for a practical book like Hoff's to include some hands-on tips about how to do these problems (R packages to use, basic modeling strategies, common pitfalls, speed concerns, assessing convergence, etc.).

This book is a smooth introduction to the concept of Bayesian statistics. Anyone with fundamental level knowledge of college statistics could follow. The only thing which could be added to the current version is more detailed Appendix about common distributions and their conjugates.

Peter does a great job explaining material clearly. However, I really wish he offered solutions to problems in the back of the book. This would make self-learning easier.

This is an excellent book but will be easier to understand if you have a M.S. level knowledge of classical (frequentist) statistics. It is clear, concise, and has good examples.

The book is used for my Bayesian stats class. I think it's easy to read and very clear. But you should make sure you do have some prior knowledge about statistics and probability, because the author takes it as granted.

Insightful book about the global rise of living standards during the industrial era. Charts a path between the political left and right on where the data supports inferences on economic growth, health and wellbeing, and inequality. Deaton also generally reflects a recognition that economics often serves best by obtaining and analyzing data to demonstrate the impact of particular policies, but that actual policy choices really often reflect considerations of norms and values that cannot be determined by the data alone.However, I agree with many other reviewers that the final section on the ineffectiveness of international aid is a mismatch from the rest of the book. It is the least data-centered of the sections and the most like a one-sided persuasive essay. I think he raises a number of valid concerns and considerations about the efficacy of international aid as it is conducted, but I fail to be convinced by his seeming conviction that efforts to reform how aid is conducted would be fruitless. He comes off as a person who has become deeply disillusioned by development aid and can no longer see the legitimacy of any arguments in its favor. However, his even-handedness and open-mindedness about other economic matters in other areas of the book does mean that I am more willing to fully consider his arguments on this issue than I might have been from someone who had not demonstrated such qualities on other issues.

2015 Nobel prizewinner in Economics - Conversational writing style with enough research background to satisfy experts. This addresses the biggest issue of our time in money & inequality. Deaton has been studying this for more than 25 years. I have been studying this topic for 4 years for a local non-partisan civic organization. If I have one recommendation to read on this topic it would be this book. It lays out the facts and issues I have gleaned from a myriad of sources over the past few years.

This is clearly the most insightful book I've read for sometime. In contrast to so much we read today, this book is optimistic about social and economic progress. It's policy recommendations for developed countries are largely hurried and not very well justified -- all except for one, and that one is very important. He makes a very strong, fact based claim that foreign aide as we think of it is largely wasted. Amelioration of world poverty is just not feasible given the infrastructure of the countries that need it most. Clearly, just writing checks doesn't do it, he claims, despite the good intentions those accompanying those checks. But he doesn't advocate doing nothing. He just advocates a carefully administered program that helps underdeveloped countries, but only if they help themselves first.

Some great economists, which we used to know only through very formal papers, are proving to be good writer. Among them, Deaton excels. It brings very good stories with an exposition that we feel like reading a Tolstoi of Science. He knows how to tell good stories, which any scientific writing should search, and which involves concepts and notions that evolve. There some impressing exposition on Wealth and Health, on Incone inequality within the USA, on income inequality in the world, as well as on some attempted remedies. Has the human race made progress since the days when all our lives were nasty, brutish, and short?Some might think this question patently silly, since it would appear to answer itself. But Angus Deaton finds in it a point of entry into his inquiry on “health, wealth, and the origins of inequality,” the subtitle of his ambitious new book. He is in no doubt that humanity has progressed, not steadily but by fits and starts — and continues to do so to this day. “Today,” he writes, “children in sub-Saharan Africa are more likely to survive to age 5 than were English children born in 1918 . . . [and] India today has higher life expectancy than Scotland in 1945.”In The Great Escape, Deaton, a veteran professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton, explores inequality — between classes and between countries — with a detailed statistical analysis of trends in infant mortality, life expectancy, and income levels over the past 250 years. He concludes that the large-scale inequality that plagues policymakers and reformers alike in the present day is the result of the progress humanity has made since The Great Divergence (between “the West and the rest”) since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. “Economic growth,” Deaton asserts, “has been the engine of international income inequality.”No argument there: Deaton is far from alone in this belief. Other scholars have written extensively about this topic in recent years. A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World, by Gregory Clark, is just one example.Late in the 18th Century, the countries of Northern Europe and North America on the one hand and those of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America on the other hand were not that far apart as measured by the available indicators of health and income. Deaton cites “one careful study [that] estimates that the average income of all the inhabitants of the world increased between seven and eight times from 1820 to 1992.” However, that average obscures a harsh reality. The ever-quickening rate of change in “the West” since 1760 or so has widened the gap between (and within) countries to an extreme degree. Deaton terms the freedom from destitution and early death that so many of us now enjoy “The Great Escape,” taking his title from the 1963 film of that name about a massive escape of prisoners from a German P.O.W. camp in World War II.Only now is the gap closing between the rich nations and China and India (by far the world’s two biggest countries, with nearly 40 percent of the planet’s population and half the world’s poor). Deaton doesn’t consider a bright future for all a certainty, not by any means, in view of global climate change and the ever-present threat of killer pandemics. But, assuming the species continues to thrive, there is sufficient data available now to have some confidence that the gross inequality now existing among nations will not persist forever. After all, five sub-Saharan African countries are now growing their economies faster than China’s.However, that misleading factoid ignores the outsize role that China has played in “the Great Escape” globally. Deaton notes, as have other observers, that “the number [of] people in the world living on less than a (2005) dollar a day fell from about 1.5 billion in 1981 to 805 million in 2008 . . . [This] decline in numbers is driven almost entirely by the Chinese growth miracle; if China is excluded, 785 million people lived on less than a dollar a day in 1981 compared with 708 million in 2008.” (This reality is one of the principal reasons why Paul Polak and I insist in The Business Solution to Poverty that traditional methods to end poverty have largely failed. After all, China’s methods were hardly traditional!)In the course of exploring the historical record of growing inequality on the world stage, Deaton delves deeply into the role of foreign aid (officially, Overseas Development Assistance, or ODA) and finds it comes up short. ”You cannot develop other countries from the outside with a shopping list for Home Depot, no matter how much you spend,” he writes. With the exception of outside interventions in public health programs — including such breakthroughs as the eradication of smallpox and the near-success with polio — Deaton finds that foreign aid has done more harm than good. He argues that where the conditions for development are present, outside resources are unnecessary. Where they’re absent, ODA entrenches local elites, distorts the local economy, and discourages local initiative. The author insists that “the record of aid shows no evidence of any overall beneficial effect.”But that’s only part of the story.In 2012, ODA totaled about $136 billion. Throw in another $30 billion or so from NGOs, and total outside assistance comes to under $200 billion annually. However, net resource transfers from developing countries to rich countries are well in excess of $500 billion annually. (Transfers reached a peak of $881 billion in 2007, fell with the Great Recession, but are rising again.) Quite apart from the fact that an estimated 70 percent of “foreign aid” is actually spent on products and services from donor nations, ODA merely puts a dent in the huge disadvantage that poor countries suffer as a result of lopsided trade policies and prevailing political and commercial imbalances. In any case, just one factor in those resource flows — remittances from overseas residents of poor countries to their families back home — are twice as large as ODA.The Great Escape is a worthy effort from a senior scholar whose wide-ranging studies have led him to big-picture conclusions. Policymakers and practitioners should be listening carefully.

I learned a lot from this book. I wish the author had made it a little less graph heavy, but I liked that he thoroughly investigated all sides of his arguments. It's made me contemplate whether my service abroad was making a difference, or if I was part of the problem. I'm glad that this book was able to awaken me to that.
